Execution of the 5 stained glass windows for the chapel of St. Peter.
The project to depict the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, from the gospel of St. John, was begun in 2002. A colossal undertaking, requiring 300 m² of bas-relief ceramic to realise the five windows. Miquel Barcelo’s figurative imagery, with its sombre palette, its artist-made painterly marks, strongly evoke the sense of a watery grotto.
The vastness of the painted surface, 80 m², demanded an innovative approach. Barcelo used quasi-industrial tools to allow him the immediacy of working the grisaille over the whole. Once complete, the glass was then fired and glazed again using a light antique glass. Once leaded and assembled, the final piece was installed in the cathedral.
